Over the last 10 to 15 years, many large organizations have gone through a structural transformation of their HR function that has centered on redistributing HR work into three key HR groups: HR Business Partners, Centers of Excellence, and Shared Service Centers and although many companies have made this work stream switch, we know that this structural change is not a one-time event and instead a long-term journey towards enabling the HR function to deliver higher value to the organization.  To this end, many companies have experienced issues with effectively implementing this new delivery model and have made unique adjustments to the model to make work more effectively in their context.

In this working group, we will look to share learnings and best practices in how companies have navigated their own transformation to enable the HR function to play a more strategic role and create more value for their companies.  Topics for the discussion will include:

  • What were/are the critical success factors to enable the HR function to become a more strategic partner to the business?  How did these factors differ across the three areas of Business Partners, COEs, and Shared Services?

  • What are the current or on-going challenges that you are looking to address to enable the function to create more value for the business?

  • What have you done to enable the three areas of HR to work more effectively together?  For example, how has your organization created better partnerships between Business Partners and Centers of Excellence?  How have you ensured that there is smooth handoff and collaboration between Shared Services and Centers of Excellence?

  • What have you done to help successfully shift the culture in HR to ensure HR leaders and professionals more connected to the business and not just work that the function thinks is important?

  • What are the key competencies that differentiate the highest performing HR Business Partners and CoE Professionals in this model?  Which of these competencies are the hardest to find and/or develop?  What has your organization done to successfully build these competencies in your HR population?

  • What has been your company’s approach to maximizing service levels and creating value for the business in the Shared Service Centers?  Have you kept these inside the firm, outsourced some or all of shared services, automated aspects of shared services with artificial intelligence and robotics?

  • How is your company measuring and tracking the added value created by the HR function as you continue on this transformation journey?

The meeting agenda will allow for ample time for interaction and networking -; something we consider critical to the goal of our working groups. The sessions are free of charge to CAHRS partner firms.  To effectively create the right environment and to ensure free and open discussion, we limit the size of the meeting to 25 participants.  This working group will run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with a continental breakfast starting at 8:30 am and working lunch.
