Scandals in organizations frequently catalyze discussions about whether and how unethical activity has been fostered or triggered by the organization’s incentive systems. Among many recent examples (e.g., Glaxo Smith Kline in 2015, Kobe Steel in 2017, Purdue Pharma in 2018), one that drew large public notice is the case of Wells Fargo (which came to light in 2016) in which employees opened unauthorized bank and credit card accounts without customer consent. As one journalist surveying the landscape of recent corporate misbehavior put it: “The lesson is that no matter how much compliance training you give your employees, there is only so much that [you] can do if your pay structures are still encouraging them to be corrupt.” Are all these statements and intuitions fully grounded by theories and empirics? Are there any intricacies in making the connection between incentives and ethics?
In this webcast, Tae-Youn Park, Associate Professor of HR Studies at the ILR School, Cornell University, will share insights on the linkage between incentives and ethics, with specific focuses on extant theories and evidence.
