Talent Planning VIRTUAL Working Group

Although talent planning is simple in concept, it has proven difficult in practice, especially given the many unprecedented challenges facing companies today. Uncertain business forecasts, shifting strategic priorities, and volatile labor supplies are just some of the factors that impede talent planning. On the positive side, increased access to data and analytics allows for greater insight into employee movement and future forecasting, while new tools and software facilitate the planning process.   In this working group, John Hausknecht, Professor of HR Studies, will lead a discussion around the following issues:

•    How do you address different types of talent planning? How do you think about balancing strategic/long-term plans with more short-term/tactical planning?
•    What successes have you had in aligning business/talent demand forecasts with talent/labor supply? How do you resolve supply-demand gaps?
•    How do you partner with the business to identify future demand for products/services to help you identify talent needs? What are the challenges and how are you addressing them?
•    Longer planning time horizons usually result in less accurate forecasts. How do you balance tradeoffs of accuracy and certainty in talent planning?
•    What processes/tools/systems have you found useful for talent planning?

Our virtual working groups are kept small to allow for rich discussion and best practice sharing.  Given the limited size of each session, we ask that you only register for a session if you will be able to attend for the duration.  Prior to the session, attendees should give some thought to the questions above so they are prepared to share with the group.  We also strongly prefer that participants be on camera during the session to allow for more engaging interaction.
